Down with the beautiful people!
Saturday 23rd September 2017 - Le Lavandou.
We tore ourselves away from the fantastic Aire de Camp at Bargemon early...ish this morning. We drove back through Draguignan to visit the Lidl for staple shopping. Staple shopping includes cereal, bread, fruit, wine and beer. On this occasion it also included salmon steaks for our meal tonight and Toulouse sausage for tomorrow. Brother David (who lives in France) has tipped us off about French industrial action to blockade fuel depots starting next Monday so we also filled up with diesel.
We headed for the Côte d'Azur. Janice came to Nice and St Tropez when she was a l'lle lass of 16 years with her brother and girlfriend (wife to be). Back then she was propositioned to join an Arabic looking man on his expensive yacht. She turned him down....and what a good thing she did.....she may never have been seen again! We didn't intend to stay at St Tropez but I thought we must pay a visit, just to say I had been.
We parked the van near Port Grimaud and cycled into St Tropez.
This was our first close sight of the Mediterranean Sea and in the distance St Tropez. I didn't have much of an expectation of what it would be like but on arrival it was a pretty harbour with the most expensive boats I have ever seen.
Janice thought she recognised the Arab gentleman who had tried to entice her all those years ago. She asked him if the offer was still open. He denied any knowledge of the meeting and walked on by!
The impression of St Tropez was really very nice. There were lots of lovely expensive shops but in a quaint old town setting.
We had our picnic on the harbour walls because we couldn't risk having to buy any food or drinks at the prices we had seen. It was actually a nice place, probably a bit on the expensive side but what do you expect. We also resisted the temptation for buy portraits of Brigitte Bardot in her prime. Apparently Brigitte is 82 years old now, which is pretty good considering I thought she was dead.....we had to google her to check! Looking at her pictures now I think she may be kept alive my medical science! She seems very famous despite the fact that no one can remember any of her films. I'm sure she had some assets in her time.
We moved on to a smaller coastal town that we thought we could afford to stay at. That town sounded like a public toilet and was called Le Lavandou. We prefer to think of it as 'smelling of Lavender'. We had chosen a camp site from a Caravan Club book. Our choice was based on the cheapest in the area. The site was actually 22 euro per night which is cheap for South coast France because all the others have pools, bars, entertainment and restaurants that we don't want. It was a lovely spacious site with electricity hook ups and clean toilets....that will do.
We relaxed in the late afternoon at the site and then made our tea. I am conscious that we haven't shown you our meals, so here is what we had today.
It was a nice balmy evening and we had a walk to explore the town. It felt like a different world to Bargemon where we had just come from. The seafront and promenade was lovely, there is a large funfair wheel which was lit up and had flashing lights. The promenade restaurants were pleasantly busy considering the time of year. The sea lapped gently on the nice long sandy beach. Definately a good beach holiday resort.
