Tangfastic!
Tuesday 3rd October 2017 - Near Uzes. Can't spell the town name!
This morning I took a read of the Boys Comic that I get free from a Bank who I have an account with. The Boys Comic is called Men's Health! I call it a Boys Comic because it is full of complete rubbish and I wouldn't pay for it and I wouldn't want my son to read it because of the misleading misrepresentation of 'health' that it contains....it's laughable in a strange way. The magazine tells readers that if they overindulge on alcohol and junk food over the weekend it's ok if they have a smoked salmon and egg brunch the day after!! Also, they shouldn't loose sleep about their drunkeness but should have a half hour snooze in the afternoon because that will replenish their immune system and testosterone levels!! It gives spurious health science to justify anything that a young man may prefer to do other than do the things that would actually make him more healthy and stick to a proper healthy lifestyle. I don't know whether this is a 'rant' or 'having a laugh'. There are occasionally some good exercise ideas but few and far between compared to the laughable rubbish it mostly contains.
After my read we walked into Uzes. The ring road was busy but the centre was quiet and pedestrian only. Really impressed.
Le Duchy D'Uzes - I think it would be called a Chateau normally. It's right in the centre and is just one of many attractive historic buildings.
We had coffee in the Place Aix Herbes...
Our Aire de Camping was at a vineyard called St Fermin and we called in the shop to buy some of their wine before we moved on about 3km to a proper site south of Uzes. The site is pleasantly spacious and.....we can't believe it.....the wifi works well throughout the site. It's never been known before, they promise working wifi but it never delivers unless it is totally localised.
After lunch we cycled the 20km to the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard. On the way we came across the Haribo factory and Bon-Bon Musee.
I didn't know this was where Haribo sweets were made. I am partial to the sour, sugary cherry shaped sweets they do in the tangfastic mix.....but my body is a temple.. I suppose Men's Health magazine would be able to justify me pigging out on the sweets somehow!
The cycling was fabulous...
The back roads were quiet. Passing through vineyards and villages in perfect, warm temperatures. In the interests of balance I should mention that we did later get a shower of rain and it became quite windy on the way back.
Pont du Gard aqueduct was built by the Romans in the 1st Century AD to bring water from the Uzes area to town of Nimes. It is considered the best surviving example in the world. The cost to see it varies from 8.50 euro to 13 euro but we knew that we were allowed to use a cycle path and get in for free.
I think you could say it's been dry recently. Not much of the river Gardon is to be seen but the Pont is spectacular. The water would flow at the top level.
It was nice that we cycled across but almost everyone else paid 8.50 euro or more just because they came in a car. I have wanted to see this aqueduct for a long time and it still is impressive - they built it a lot better than the Pont D'Avignon!!
Once back at the site we had a swim in the pool. A bit of a luxury, it certainly cooled us down and refreshed us. I know you may be shocked but we have been in France for 3 weeks and a day and we still haven't eaten out for a meal. I know it's shocking! However, we are enjoying the food and wine. We had the St Fermin wine tonight (from Uzes). It was lovely. Overall, another Tangfastic day!
